LIFEGUARD SUBMARINES

For naval aviators in World War II, a major worry was what would happen if they were shot down in the Pacific, because the Japanese did not treat captives in accordance with the Geneva Accords regarding prisoners of war. Beyond that, there was the possibility of being lost in the trackless sea following after a crash.
The United States Navy has a long tradition of not leaving men behind if it is possible to rescue them. It wasn’t advisable for a surface ship to operate near a Japanese target, so this duty of “lifeguard” fell to the Submarine Force.
Between October 1943 and August 1945, 86 submarines rescued 520 U.S. and Allied airmen. USS Tigrone (SS 419) set the record with 31 over several missions, including the last pilot rescued during the war, picked up on August 14, 1945.
Many of the rescue missions became legendary. Submarine crews put their ships and themselves at risk in the rescue of fliers under the enemy’s nose. The legendary Sam Dealey, captain of USS Harder (SS-257), deliberately ran his submarine against a reef so that volunteers from his crew could rescue Ensign John Galvin, with Harder under fire from the enemy ashore. At Truk Atoll in April 1944, USS Tang (SS-306) traded gunfire with Japanese shore batteries as she rescued an astounding 22 fliers over the course of two days.
The stories of the Lifeguard League are among the most dramatic and daring tales of World War II.

I thought it was too short. It seemed to be a narrative told in a synopsis form; it could have gone into a lot more detail about life on board submarines in the war with Japan.Product details
